Associate Speaker/Trainer/Educator
Needed ASAP – Termtime only
We are looking for a self-employed Relationships, Sex & Health Education (RSHE) professional (ideally with a specialist background in substance/addiction/harm-reduction work)
Are you looking for freelance work at the moment? We are looking for another brilliant person to join our team of presenters @ It Happens Education
We are an exciting small business supporting schools with inclusive Relationships, Sex & Health Education (RSHE). We currently deliver lectures/workshops & training to students/parents & teachers all over the UK (and more recently in Europe/worldwide). We are looking to expand our provision around substance education, but the Health elements of the curriculum often intersect with Relationships & Sex education topics so a passion for all things RSHE is essential!
- We have delivered a series of webinars aimed at parents, carers & guardians with young people going to Boardmasters Festival on behalf of Vision Nine.
- We have worked with Festival Republic & Berkshire West Children Safeguarding Team around festival safety at Reading Festival.
- We have worked with Drug Science & The Exchange, co-creating lesson plans and resources for teaching about vaping, harm reduction & addiction in schools.
- We are founder members of the newly launched Drug Education Forum.
- We are proud partners of the Sex Education Forum.
- We are members and big fans of PSHE Association.
- We have been consultants for BBC Bitesize, BBC Teach, Operation Ouch & Channel 4.
- We published Brilliant Questions about Growing Up (Penguin, 2020).
- We have spoken at many Conferences, including BSA, HMC, GSA, IAPS & GDST.
- And contributed to academic research projects such as: Influencer Culture in the Digital Age and Parental Attitudes to RSHE
Our team of Associates working in schools are expected to deliver tailored:
- Engaging face-to-face sessions in schools across the UK
- Well-paced, discursive pre-recorded work delivered as mp4s
- Slick live interactive (Menti)digital webinars hosted on Teams/Zoom/Meets etc
The successful applicant will be confident in all these delivery formats. The presentation content is all devised, created and provided for the It Happens Education speakers to ensure schools receive a consistent product – no matter whom they meet. We also train our team up to use Mentimeter for interactivity.
Some of our work is for whole year groups; delivered via lecture style talks & presentations to complement and enhance existing RSHE provision. Some work is bespoke and for smaller groups and involves workshops, hands-on activities & object-based learning to really untangle complex topics in detail. All work is interactive, engaging and student voice is at the heart of everything we do.
Essential:
It is vital that this person is an excellent communicator & confident presenter, with a passion for the subject and a deep understanding of adolescent lives and safeguarding young people. The successful applicant will be well-qualified and ‘a safe pair of hands’ in this sensitive and, at times, challenging area.
We hope to find:
An efficient, well-organised self-starter with professional experience working in the substance sector (we currently have speakers who have spent a significant number of years working in nursing, substance services, medicine, youth work, teaching etc). The successful candidate will be entirely remote; able and willing to travel all over the country, be ‘on the road’ for consecutive days, on trains, up & down motorways and staying in hotels during busy periods. There will be a requirement to work some termtime evenings and some weekends too. *We do not take bookings in the school holidays at the moment*
Role includes:
Working with all students between Year 5 and Year 13. We cover many of the topics in the Relationships, Sex & Health Education Statutory Guidance. (BUT not all student year groups/topics are required in the first instance).
Supporting parents navigate RSHE. This is a huge part of the job and often means being present at Parent RSHE info evening/Parental Consultations and exploring some of these tricky topics with a huge variety of different families.
Training teachers is vital in the current climate. It is often bespoke and can be delivered as INSET, staff meetings or tailored half-day/whole day interactive sessions for all members of the school team (SLT, academic staff, pastoral leads, PSHE teachers, support team including TA HLTA SENCO and beyond).
Admin:
There is significant admin support provided for diarising and communications with schools (quotes, booking confirmations, pre-session surveys, logistics, feedback forms and invoicing is all covered by our amazing Admin Managers) But it is crucial that the successful applicant will be efficient and reliable with time-management and professional communication with clients. Therefore, a thorough understanding of busy teachers in busy schools and a working knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 (Teams, Outlook & PowerPoint) is necessary. Regular digital team meetings are scheduled at a mutually convenient time.
Induction & Training:
Whilst the perfect applicant will already be well-trained and confident with this subject matter, there will obviously be an induction; it is expected that any new team member will shadow/team-teach in the first instance. The successful applicant will be invited to attend a 2-day residential team meeting in July 2024.
Remuneration & Start Date: to be discussed on application.
Please apply by contacting hello@ithappens.education with a CV and include:
1) A short explanation of why this is the perfect role for you.
2) A summary of your feelings about the DfE Statutory RSHE Guidance, with emphasis on the Substance items in the Health section.
3) Complete this sentence: “I believe RSHE external speakers are a useful resource for the whole school community because…”
Deadline for applications is 20th March 2024. Interviews w/c 8th April 2024
If you are shortlisted, you will be asked to complete a short task involving a pre-recorded piece of work demonstrating presentational skills and subject knowledge. We look forward to hearing from you!
